Renowned for his lavish film productions, Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali introduces his first series, “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” which premiered on Netflix this Wednesday.
Set against the tumultuous period of the 1940s in India during the struggle for independence, the series delves into the lives of courtesans in the kothas, or courtesan houses. It stars a notable ensemble cast including Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sharmin Segal, and Sanjeeda Sheikh.

In February last year, Ted Sarandos, co-chief executive of Netflix, joined Bhansali in Mumbai to launch the show. The narrative is set in pre-independence India, in the Heeramandi area of Lahore, now in Pakistan. Originally a thriving diamond market, the area became renowned as a center of prostitution under British rule, where tawaifs, or courtesans, commanded significant influence and power.
The plot centers around Mallikajaan, the matriarch of a prestigious courtesan house, whose authority is contested by Fareedan, the daughter of her late adversary. As the national freedom movement intensifies outside, Mallikajaan’s elder daughter, Bibbojaan, aspires to join the liberation struggle, contrary to her mother’s wishes, while her younger daughter, Alamzeb, dreams of a romantic liaison with a nobleman’s son, seeking an escape from Heeramandi.
“This is a story of love, power, freedom, and exceptional women – their aspirations and challenges. It marks a new milestone in my career,” Bhansali expressed last month.
Heeramandi Cast and Characters
The series showcases Manisha Koirala as Mallikajaan, leading a stellar cast with Sonakshi Sinha portraying Fareedan, Aditi Rao Hydari as Bibbo, and Richa Chadha as Lajjo, all renowned for their roles as formidable women in cinema.
Sharmin Segal, debuting in Bhansali’s earlier film “Malaal,” plays Alamzeb, and Sanjeeda Sheikh, a celebrated television actress now transitioning to films, appears as Waheeda. The series also features Abu Dhabi-born actor Taha Shah Badussa as Tajdar, the nobleman who falls for Alamzeb.
